Samba – file sharing for linux and windows

Samba can use for:
1. File and print server for Windows clients.
2. Act as a domain controller for Windows computer.

SMB = Server Message Block protocol
CIFS = Common Internet Filesystem protocol
UNC = Unique Naming Convention (//server/share/)

Samba Server:
nmbd: Deamon handles all NetBIOS.
smbd: Deamon provode file and print service for clients.

Install:

$ sudo apt-get -y install samba4 samba4-clients samba-doc

Configure:
Alway to remember backup default config file before make changes.

$ cd /etc/samba

$ sudo cp smb.conf smb.conf.original
$ sudo vi smb.conf

Global setting:

[global]

workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = %h server (Samba Server 001)
security = user

Security options:
user – need provide samba username and password when connecting to server
share – need provide password when connecting to share folder
server – username and password authenticated by another server
domain – domain controller authenticate
ads – as domain member

Configure share folder

[data]

path = /data/public
comment = Public Folder
guest ok = yes
browserable = yes

Save and restart samba service:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba4 restart

Check samba setting:

$ testparm
